I love spinning classes. They’re quick, fast-paced and in 45 minutes get the heart pumping and make you sweat like a little piggy that not many other gym classes can do. Only thing I’m not a huge fan of is the doof-doof music, but it does help keep you motivated and the faster the beat the faster my legs tend to work so I guess that’s what it’s there for.
What I don’t get about spinning classes however, are people who go to all the effort of getting out their full on cycling gear and showing up on time to class – then sit back and spend more time on their Blackberry phones than actually spinning. What’s the point?
I was in a class this week where the woman next to me almost fell off her bike three times because she was so busy BBM-ing some poor soul that she wasn’t paying attention and when the instructor bellowed for us to stand and cycle she almost took me out with her. Why would you even think to check your phone during exercise-time – let alone conduct what was clearly a very juicy conversation.
I know I am quite serious when it comes to my precious time in the gym, but even for those with a less serious attitude I don’t understand why you would even bother showing up if you don’t intend to use that time to sweat, grunt and gasp with the rest of us riding like our little lives depended on it.
It’s almost as bad as those people who sit on the normal stationary bikes and read a book… WTF are you DOING? There is time for reading and there is time for exercise… they don’t mix if you actually plan on getting your heart rate elevated beyond the heart-racing promise of the latest Mills and Boon (which BTW isn’t likely to be anywhere NEAR your target heart rate anyway).
So yeah, it’s a rant but it’s a valid one methinks. *sigh* What do you think?
