We talk a lot about The Goddess in Tantra. Who is she, this Goddess?
 
She is mystical and magical, ethereal, an ideal to aspire to, a concept of Woman, a teacher, a healer, a priestess, a sacred sexual being. She is strong, powerful, brave, beautiful, sensual, sexual, spiritual. An adventuress, a tigress, a dragon, a saint, a slut…
 
She’s also very real.
She looks remarkably like you.
She doesn’t have a ‘media body’. She doesn’t have ‘perfect hair or face’. She hasn’t been airbrushed and photoshopped to magazine-advert ‘standard’.
She’s flawed and blemished and scarred and chipped and plump and scratched.
 
So what makes her a Goddess?
She’s been on, is on a journey.
She’s healed and healing, she’s growing, she’s questioning, she’s releasing,  she’s reaching, she’s travelling, she’s connecting, she’s becoming…
 
She’s peeling away, sometimes with painful tears, the layers that prevent her true self from showing. She’s releasing what she’s been told she needs to do to be loved. She’s seeing the currency and the price for what she thought was, been told was love.
 
She’s freeing herself from the expectation of others as she sees the price of life. The cost is the parts of herself she has to hide, to repress, to lock deep inside until they wither to formless wisps of memory. The price of such a life of illusion often being no more than a cage of control.
 
She’s examining her life, her thoughts, her words, her deeds in the light of an ever-growing truth. Her eyes are seeing more than ever, each day a knowing that expands as she journeys deep into herself, and allows this inner vision to look at her life and her world anew.
 
She’s given, giving herself permission to pleasure. To be a consciously acknowledged and self owned sensual and sexual being. She frees herself from the narrow limitations of pleasure. She reclaims her body, she connects with her fire, her passion, her desire. Through her body she feels her beauty, her power. I often talk about how important the context is for many sexual and sensual experiences.

Late last week I had a new understanding of this in relation to Tantra.

The definition of pleasure, the way in which it takes place, the situation that we allow it, is extremely limiting.

Our society has given us, and we have accepted the space that pleasure happens in, as a narrow expression of the possibilities.

Pleasure, sensual and sexual touching, which may or may not include orgasm, is allowed within a relationship, an affair, a pick-up, a one-night-stand etc.

We even accept this with a sex worker, we may not like it, but we’ve given tacit consent to it.

Then along comes Tantra.

Which says that you can have a pleasurable experience in a totally different context.

This is often without the expectation of reciprocation, which is one of the most important aspects of creating safety for women to have peak experiences.

The idea of pleasure being a gift, a sacred expression, an act of worship, challenges some of our core beliefs and limitations.

It’s scary, even terrifying for some people, it can turn their world upside down.

Because we don’t have a place to put it.

The Tantric journey is expressed in many ways, and the range of practices that teachers use is varied.

There is a way and a place for all of us.

But what we all have in common is creating a new context for pleasure in the world.

This includes the separation of love and sex. It takes us beyond illusion and expectation into a place of deeper honesty. It frees us from agendas. It allows us to explore the myriad aspects of ourselves through our sensuality and sexuality.

It gives us access to a world of energy and creative possibility beyond what we are often aware of.

It guides us to the connection between sexuality and spirituality, a concept which most of our world finds extremely challenging on its own.

It gives us the idea of sexual energy, how we can use this for more than ‘just sex’.

It gives us a guide to heightened states of pleasure, of elevated consciousness, of the depths within us.

It gives those not in relationships, or in unsatisfying and unfulfilled relationships, the possibility of sensual and sexual pleasure, access to their energy.

One of the most fearful aspects of these experiences is freedom.

As you go beyond the boundaries of sexual norms, you free yourself from many unspoken constraints, you challenge some of the deepest aspects of what we’ve been told is necessary for our society.

You take yourself beyond control.

You take yourself to choice and responsibility.

You take yourself to consciousness.

To thinking about relationships, about pleasure, why, how, what do I want, to give, to receive, to explore, to heal, to feel.

You free yourself to remove the masks that we’ve all put in place to be loved and accepted, the personas that hide the real you, the beautiful you.

You take yourself beyond judgement. To choice, to exploration, to growth, to expansion, to truth.

What is fascinating and wonderful is how many people are dipping their toes into the ocean of Tantra.

And each one of these, each one of us as teachers, healers, writers, practitioners, for each one that joins us on this journey, for a day or a lifetime, we make it possible for others to step onto the path.

With love, with celebration.

Knowing that the definition of love is not as limited as we’ve been told it is, that there are many ways to share moments, connections, pleasure, a heart, a look, a touch.

A context that allows us rather than forbids us.

A context that expands us rather than constricts us.

A context that frees us rather than limits us.

A context of love rather then fear.

It’s open, it’s honest, it’s clear.

And it’s here, in many ways, for all of us.

Everything in our lives makes sense to us as individuals only when seen within a framework or context that we recognize. I watched the reaction of women at our stand in SEXPO with fascination, as most audibly gasped at the sight of a vagina/yoni being pleasured on the screen. Nearly every woman I spoke to about it, when seeing the yoni massage video in context ( the context being educating their husbands/partners/lovers in a practical how to method to bring immense pleasure through direct genital stimulation with a massage technique that can be learned step by step) then turned around and started watching the video. Seen in a different context, nearly EVERY woman was then able to watch it and discuss it with me.
What I learned from this is that within even the framework of an exhibition like SEXPO, people still need a context, a framework to give themselves permission to pleasure.
So many understand the context of porn, of all the images on open display at SEXPO, yet do not have a context for pleasure when it doesn’t fit the framework of what our culture teaches us about sexual pleasure.
